Tune-up your typeform: Insights from our live workshop

Creating your first typeform is easy, but sometimes it can be tricky to know what to optimize. Learn from our Typeform experts on how to tune up your typeform and get the most out of every form.

A creative, on-brand, and functional form makes all the difference when you’re connecting with your audience. The form of your form builds trust, creates a simpler purchase pipeline, and gives you richer data. We recently hosted a live workshop dedicated to helping users fine-tune their Typeform experience. Whether you missed the live event or simply want a refresher, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a comprehensive recap of the key takeaways and expert tips shared during the session.

Why optimize your typeform?

You’ve already done the most important step: created a typeform that you want to share with the world. But even the most well-designed forms benefit from periodic tune-ups. Getting in the habit of optimizing your typeform can lead to higher completion rates, more accurate data collection, and an overall better user experience.

Key takeaways from the workshop

1. Design matters

A more beautiful form makes for a better user experience—it’s the truth. Your form should be on-brand, meaning it aligns with your brand colors, branding elements, and styles, and should be consistent with your website and other customer-facing touch points.

2. Streamline Questions

Keep your questions relevant and focused. Our data on data report found that surveys with fewer than 6 questions had the highest response rates.

With so few questions to actually collect information, it’s key that your questions flow logically and seem relevant to the survey taker. You might understand the flow of questioning, but if it’s not clear to your respondent, they could exit and leave you abandoned. Group your questions together to make the connection clear for survey takers, and use Logic to personalize question paths based on responses.

3. Engagement Techniques

A personalized, interactive form gets more engagement than run-of-the-mill, impersonal forms. Typeform makes it easy to incorporate images and videos to make your form more engaging (you can even use video to ask questions, cool, right?).

Personalization is not only cool, but also builds trust. Hidden Fields can be used to remember and recall almost any piece of information about a respondent. From their name to their shoe size (maybe you sell shoes, who knows?), you can collect almost any information and use it for segmentation and personalization in your typeforms.

4. Optimizing for Mobile

Make sure your typeform is ready for mobile devices. If you’re not sure, test it from a variety of devices before pushing your form live. Also remember to keep your forms short and sweet—long and complex forms can be daunting on smaller screens and could result in lower completion rates.

5. Analyzing Performance

Once your form looks good, it’s time to consider how it’s performing. When evaluating whether and where your form can be improved, keep an eye on completion rates and drop-off points. If you’re not sure whether an update would be helpful or hurtful, try an A/B test. An A/B test involves creating two versions of your form with only one change between them. Then, half your audience receives form A and half your audience receives form B. Focusing on one change at a time allows you to hone in on what‌ makes a difference to completion and drop-off rates.

Typeform expert tips and tricks

 Use Logic Jumps:

Logic jumps can make your form smarter by showing or hiding questions based on previous answers. This not only makes the form shorter but also more relevant to each respondent.

Embed Forms:

Embedding your Typeform directly into your website or landing pages can increase visibility and completion rates.

Thank You Screens:

A well-crafted thank-you screen can leave a lasting impression. Use it to thank respondents, provide next steps, or even offer additional resources.
